Scoring guidelines for Claim Activity/Assessment

Jocelyn Rivas
Jocelyn Rivas 30 days ago

It's my second-year teaching AP and I'm still struggling with the content and feel more comfortable assigning work that has a scoring guideline/teacher version. However, I can't seem to find them since the redesign. I clicked on the hammer, and it has it for some activities, but not for the claim activities or the FRQs. Can someone point me in the right direction as to where they're posted?

Hi, Jocelyn Rivas  - can you give a more specific example of a lesson you're trying to find the teacher version for?  I find the hyperlinks embedded in each unit's lesson (the hammer for Lesson 4.3, for example) gives answers, but I'm not sure about the claim activities you reference.

Hi again Jocelyn Rivas - I think I see what you mean now.  I recently assigned the Transformation of Beliefs Sourcing activity and turned it into a DBQ, and cannot find scoring guides.  Hopefully one of the OER Project gurus, like Becca Horowitz or Bennett Sherry can help us!

Hi Carrie. Yes, thats what I was referring to. For the FRQ's I couldn't find any scoring guidelines. I just want to be certain when I'm grading them that I'm scoring them accurately.

Hi Jocelyn Rivas and thanks for your question. We do have sample answers and feedback forms for all of our historical thinking skills and reasoning processes activities (causation, claim testing, sourcing, etc.) and those can be found in the lesson guides (click on the hammer at the top of a lesson page to find these). Historically, we have not provided scoring guides for the sourcing collections (we encourage students to use the Quick-Sourcing Tool) or for the DBQs. Because many teachers modify the sourcing collections and DBQs based on where their students are in their skills progression, we allow teachers to formulate their own scoring guidelines based on their own classroom needs (whether sources are shortened or added/removed). We do have two writing rubrics (LEQ and DBQ) that are based on AP rubrics and break down the elements that students need in order to score all points on these assessments. In addition, we have the AP DBQ Organizer that students can use as well as writing activities in the last lesson of each unit. Typically, these writing activities have a sample essay for the previous unit's prompt with some teacher instructions in the lesson guide, which may help in terms of devising scoring guidelines for that prompt.
