I teach BHP but I was taking at look at the Early Humans era in Origins to see if there was anything I could use. The foraging simulation sounds fun to me. Before I do it, I'd like to know if anyone has any suggestions on how best to plan and execute this activity. Are there any modifications that you've made? Can you make it into a whole period (40 minutes) or is it really just meant to be somewhat of an opening activity to something else?

I've done it twice with kids, and it works really well. Yes, it takes 25-ish minutes if you have the prep time to really hide stuff. If you hide some candy along with non-perishables, that helps keep the focus. And if you really get into it and have the space, you can hide stuff in close-by areas, middle-range, and far-away -- with the better stuff farther away. Maybe even a homework pass... But since the point is that foraging is relatively quick, it shouldn't take a whole class period.
