Contextualization ....through pictures

So I loved the Weeping Frenchmen activity in 1.2  and wanted to extend that lesson a we bit.

I put together a short little activity based on famous photographs for kids to practice contextualizing information and then applying it.

Nice stuff man.  Check this out on the "Afghan girl" from National Geographic as a follow up story.

I just stumbled onto the NYT's What's going in this picture?

That's a great idea and I wished I had followed up on it when you suggested it  Anne!

Looking at some of these pictures, I'm wondering if part of the contextualization would be connecting the image to the history. How does what's going on in the picture connect to the themes and events kids have studied?

Have these been replaced by the jeering basketball fan? I'm having trouble finding them myself. Mike Weisensel Rachel Phillips

Hi, thank you so much. Someone sent it to me. I actually used it as an example of a source being used out of context. I appreciate the community response. I just joined and I am teaching the AP class and everyone is so helpful.

This is a great idea. The Michael Jordan jump shot is also great from the introduction to contextualization.

    Chris,

I love that this lesson requires engagement and interaction from the students. I've done a similar lesson using a clips of baseball games after 9/11.

The 9/11 Museum has a page about the games and the impact that can help you guide the conversations if you aren't a baseball fan Wink
