How do you extend the use of vocab?

In an attempt to get kids to do something more with vocabulary, we have been creating visual vocab cards. Using these cards, my students teach one another “their terms” using a one on one speed dating routine, then we used them to build a word wall. Even my emerging bi-lingual kids get into the act, we use Power Point translated subtitles to overcome our language limitations in mixed classes. Hoping to extend this type of vocab practice, I would like to know what practices you are committed to using to get kids to use vocab to a greater extent?

    I've done a word wall for Units 2 and 3 and I make it a bit of a contest. I ask AI to generate random word pairs from the list and I challenge the students to make the best word wall entry across my five world sections. I cheese it up and offer prizes to the winners and make a big deal unveiling them.

    Word walls are one of the ways to go, for sure - though I definitely struggle to make these more dynamic. That is, to create a classroom feature that students will actually check and use. Curtis Greeley  Do students regularly go up and check on their vocab? What're your best practices there?
