Challenging Traditional Views of the Renaissance

Jeffrey Boles

As we are examining Era 5, students have been reading about the Renaissance. This cultural movement in Europe that started on the heels of the fourteenth century, traditionally focuses on artists such as Raphael, Michelangelo, and Leonardo da Vinci. The theme in this era routinely explores the idea of the Renaissance "Man." After our students read and discussed the article, we came across a section that looks at the women of this era. Excited about the students' curiosity on the subject, I decided to create a Renaissance project that explored individuals from the period. We spent several days researching a subject and created a museum walk-through when they were finished. The inspiration for this came from The Women of the Revolution project in Era 6. I am very interested in continuing to find ways for our students to challenge traditional views from every Era. I will continue to find better practices that will lead to this outcome and look forward to connecting with all of you on this subject.

Nice take on this Jeff! There's an assignment I give my students that might align nicely with what you've got here.  I ask my students to demonstrate their understanding of a Renaissance Man/Woman by writing a letter nominating someone to win the Modern Renaissance Man/Woman award.  I let them pick any individual they want but my favorite ones to read are the ones they write about people they know.

This is great, Todd Nussen we're talking on two different threads! Haha. I would love to use this next year with your permission. I am very caught up right now with this theme so I really appreciate your thoughts on this. Take care.

Thanks for sharing this idea, Todd Nussen . This sounds like a really worthwhile and inspiring assignment for students to do. I haven't gotten to the Renaissance yet this year, but when I do I will most likely steal this! Who are some of the well-known people students have chosen in the past?

Yeah, sorry for the delay but that's exactly what I was hoping - that it would be something you could use in the future.  That happens to me all the time in this community.  I appreciate you asking for permission, but it is totally unnecessary.  In this community, the reason I share is so that others can use resources and modify them to make them their own.

It's cool that sometimes they'll mention musicians, scientists, athletes, and even world leaders.  I used to get a bunch on Oprah and Ellen (until some of those recent accusations).  Then they would tell me about athletes who also start their own businesses and charities as well.  As I mentioned though, I really enjoy reading about their siblings and parents.  It shows me (and them) that they can find all these impressive qualities in the people that they know.

My students are currently working on their Renaissance Person Project and I had one student ask if they could do a fictional character. I was curious about who they would pick so I said sure as long as its not someone with superhuman characteristics. This is just their brainstorming sheet, but as a child of the 80s I thought this was amazing and had to share!

That's an easy A+! Good thing you said someone without superhuman characteristics because clearly Scott Howard in Teenwolf would make it to the top of the list: basketball, acting, and car surfing!
