Aztec Perspective

I just wanted to share a video I like to use with the sourcing lesson that is in Era 5.  Source 1 is an Aztec poem.  I don't spend a whole lot of time on the conquest itself, so I like to use this two-minute video of historian Camilla Townsend.  To promote her book, she was explaining the importance of Aztec sources.  It is short sweet and to the point!

    Dear Angela Flakker

Thanks so much for sharing this clip. I am always looking for resources to share about this topic. I really appreciate the primary sources in the Spanish Conquest but I have to modify the second two due to the length. Do you use all sources in the lesson or just the video? I am looking to change up my approach to the Conquest next year and am looking for ideas about how others teach this. I feel like the Conquest often gets overshadowed when we do the Columbian Exchange.

    Hey Jeffrey, glad to share!

I agree, I don't usually have time to use all of the sources.  I usually tackle the poem (Source 1) as a class.  We read it together, annotate it and discuss the meaning, then I have them fill out a modified analysis chart.  Then, I have them read Source 2 on their own or with a partner and fill out a modified analysis chart.

Later in the Columbian Exchange DBQ, there is another Aztec poem.  I think that dissecting this one as a class helps them tackle the one in the DBQ sources on their own.

Angela Flakker what an interesting clip and book! It came just on time for my lesson today. I am covering the Aztec Empire in Big History and I will use the poem to make my students reflect upon the contrasting perspectives and narratives on this ancient civilization.
