Comparison of Egypt & Japan

We had a delayed opening today and have had a couple of assemblies pop up the past couple of weeks so I am off my pacing for WHP. Looking for ideas on how to shorten the Comparison of Egypt & Japan. I thought about having my students read the articles for homework, but I know the reality is that most of them won't do it at home. I feel like it is such a worthwhile comparison, especially as we will be starting imperialism next. Does anyone have any fun or interactive ways of comparing these two nations?

Hey friend- gotta love those assemblies. This is not necessarily fun but one year, I threw out a couple different theses (variations from the teacher notes) and had them contextualize them with evidence from the articles.

I could also see pivoting the comparison model to more of a debate i.e. "Which country's industrialization had a greater impact on world history?"

Finally, maybe do like a LBH of a Japanese industrialization theme (auto, electronics, imperialism, etc) and a LBH of the Suez Canal. It could provide some good scale flipping experience

    Hi Andrea Wong !

I grabbed this cyber sandwich option from Kathryn Greene. It shortens the comparison chart and holds each partner accountable for their part of the assignment.

Showing them a couple of different theses is a great idea as well. My freshmen in the past have had a tough time writing a thesis statement with this activity, so showing them some examples might help them wrap their heads around that process as well.

Anne Koschmider  I've never heard of a cyber sandwich... but I do like this very much. At our school we have 30 minute blocks on Mondays... so this I think would fit the bill for a lot of different topics, especially comparisons.
