World War I, Russia, and Propaganda

Hello Fellow Educators,

Hope this post finds you all well. I am so excited that we have reached our final Era of the year! That's right, Era 7 and World War I. Not sure about you, but I feel like this topic really ties together everything that we have learned thus far. It's the big connector for me in so many ways because as we all know, this also sets up the final act of our class. My approach this year was different than previous years as I introduced the First World War through the Russian Revolution. Next, I gave students a presentation on Russian in 1917 to build their background on the topic. Then, I divided our class into four groups to decide what should the future of Russia look like after the Tsar abdicated his throne (this activity was adapted from the Choices Series). Reviewing their perspectives, students needed to create a propaganda poster and create a campaign pin to gain support for their view on the future of Russia. Included in their poster, students identify whether Russian troops should be withdrawn from the war or not. Attached you wil find our propaganda posters along with their pins from their presentations. While I attempted a new strategy for students to examine the impacts of propaganda, i believe students made connections to its use during World War I. That said, I am curious...do you have students analyze propaganda material using the WHP materials or is there another technique you use to introduce this concept to your learners? Let me know what you think.

This looks amazing Jeffrey Boles and I like the detail that your students have gone to. I have found that for this particular activity I tend to stick with the WHP material an adapt it slightly to suit the needs of my class. In the past I tried to do an in depth analysis of WWI propaganda but found that my students were quickly overwhelmed and lost interest. I have to admit that it never crossed my mind to get my students to create their own propaganda posters. I might have to give it a go next time round and let you know how it goes.

Thanks so much for your reply. I agree with you that students can "get lost," in the propaganda content. I feel it is very important to add the creativity aspect and allow them to create their own. In doing so, I believe they are able to make that deeper connection that we, as educators, strive for. Feel free to let me know if you are testing this out next year. I would like to hear how it goes.

Hey Jeff, this year when teaching WWII I modified the Primary Sources: World War II from the Interwar and World War II unit.  There's an excellent variety of posters to be used.  I simply copied them and put them on separate documents.  I made a few class sets and I gave the students some freedom.  I just asked them to group them together (they could make as many groups as they wanted to) and they had to explain their reasoning.  Then I asked them individually to choose any three posters and explain how they were similar different.

Todd Nussen thanks so much for posting this. Really appreciate the back and forth discussions and the work you do in the classroom sounds like so much fun! As I have been mentioning, I think one positive this year has been students doing some solid crafting and creating of their own projects including these. I'm about to close out WWI with our Peace Conference and look forward to posting our products at that point.

Nice of you to say, keep in mind, I'm only sharing the "fun" stuff with you, the rest of the time is painfully boring.  The work you have been sharing recently has also been motivating for me, and probably for others in the community as well.
