Sourcing and Claim Testing

A follow up on my recent question about Sourcing Practice:  As Ane pointed out at the end of her video about the ties to Civic Engagement, it struck me that it might be similar, or complementary, to Claim Testing.  What are others' thoughts and experiences regarding this?  I want to work on Claim Testing, too, and struggled a bit with implementation of that last year as well.

  • Hi  ! Sorry for the late reply. I have a couple more weeks before school starts and I've been burying my head in the sand a bit! 

    My students also struggled with Claim Testing last year. It was a slow and sometimes tedious process for the first half of the year, but we kept at it and eventually it started to click. One thing that I did at the start of the year that seemed to help was to provide students with a claim and several supporting statements instead of having them come up with their own. At first I gave a few goods ones and a few weak ones and had students weed out the not so great ones. Next, students ordered the stronger statements from best to just okay. I think it helped set students up for the other claim testing activities. 

    By the end of the year I switched things up a bit, as I explained in this post. What types of activities did you do for Claim Testing last year?

  • Hi  , I tie claim testing into sourcing and essentially focus more on reliability of sources. Since I have 9th graders, sourcing, bias, reliability, etc. are already pretty huge and stretch their thinking as is so claim testing is something I'm also trying to figure out how to work in. I'm interested to see how other people respond to your question!

    I'm glad to hear that you see a connection between Sourcing and Claim Testing, and love the idea of having students practice with some hand-picked, easier samples first.  

    I had a couple of false starts with each practice last year, as I was learning the curriculum.  I'm going to try to dig in to the practices and resources a bit more this year.  I'll let you know if I find any new insights!
