Empires Cheat Sheet (or Frayer model...)

ERIN CUNNINGHAM

I'm a fan of the foldables and I've got one going in my World History classes to review the basics of empires before we get to studying specific empires.

Earlier this week, students completed this "investigation" based on the "What is an empire?" article and they read the Authority and Control in Ancient Empires article yesterday. To review, we did some "magic" paper folding that resulted in a Frayer model cheat sheet.

Step 1: Hold paper landscape style

Step 2: Fold paper across ("hamburger style"0

Step 3: Fold across again ("hamburger style")

Step 4: Find the corner that is most "closed" (think of where the center of the unfolded paper would be) and fold over about an inch or two

Step 5: Unfold and trace the creases with a pen/market EXCEPT for inside the center box

Step 6: Label the sections however you'd like! Here's how we did ours...

BONUS POINTS if you're totally extra with your students about the folding process and the "big" reveal when you unfold Laughing

Today, I added another element for students. After they read one of the five empires articles from Origins 3.6, I had them fill out the back of the Frayer model for the empire they read about like this:

Oooh, you had me at vocabulary!

I like it, we took it a couple of steps further by the end of last year. I printed them on cardstock, two per page, then cut them apart. The kids loved it!

Curtis Greeley , your template is great! I love teaching vocabulary--I had gotten away from it when we started developing our World History course but I've been reintroducing it now that I'm more familiar and confident with the curriculum.

I like the illustration box on yours--how do you prompt kids for that when the term is more conceptual?

We brainstorm, for instance, one of my all -time favorite, one kid illustrated Queen Nzinga with the image of a man, dressed in drag, beard stubble and a tutu.

The fun comes when the kid explains that Queen Nzinga ruled at a time when women could not rule, so she masqueraded as a man, a king. As a result, her concubines masqueraded as women to keep up the pretense.  Times like these make you think that yes, they can learn!! :-)

ERIN CUNNINGHAM and Curtis Greeley thank you for sharing your templates. Though I don't teach Origins, this is applicable to Big History as well when we cover Threshold 7 Agriculture & Complex Societies.

ERIN CUNNINGHAM you gave me an idea. I just started Threshold 6 Collective Learning and I would like to do a foldable cube or something of similar format for each of the hominins we cover in Big History. Do you have instructions on how to fold them? Or maybe you have another suggestion. When I saw your display it reminded me of these foldable economic sectors that I use in AP Human Geo.

Laura Massa , I don't have directions for that particular Foldable, but here are images for a couple of others you might find useful, as well as Dinah Zike's website, she popularized these- https://dinah.com/dinah-zikes-big-book-of-world-history-for-middle-school-and-high-school/
