Empires Cheat Sheet (or Frayer model...)

ERIN CUNNINGHAM you gave me an idea. I just started Threshold 6 Collective Learning and I would like to do a foldable cube or something of similar format for each of the hominins we cover in Big History. Do you have instructions on how to fold them? Or maybe you have another suggestion. When I saw your display it reminded me of these foldable economic sectors that I use in AP Human Geo.

I'm trying out the envelope foldable today! We're on lesson 3.7 of Origins (Comparing Rome and the Han Dynasty). The kids just left for lunch (we have a split period) so here are some pictures of their work in progress.

For the tab under the empire name, they're using the sentence expansion technique from the Writing Revolution that prompts them to answer who, did what, when, where, why/how to summarize a longer text into 1-2 sentences. Then they're using the articles from WHP to provide examples for each of the frames. Each student read one of the 2 articles and their partners read the other so we're also doing some crowdsourcing/jigsawing to fill in all the information. Finally, they will glue the foldables into their notebooks as reference materials for an upcoming open-note quiz.

Circling back to this conversation.  I think I'm going to try these out.  Have you used them for other assignments like political, economic, social, geographic causes of something? Any drawing involved or just writing?

 Todd Nussen , this one isn't a foldable but it's the same kind of thinking and had kids using words and/or images to convey their understanding.

I also used this one for AP Euro but it could work at any level history class.
