How are you making connections between local and global events in the classroom? Any activities that help students scale up and down in this area?

I wonder how teachers are connecting ideas from their local histories to modern events? Are there any assignments that guide students from people in their town and tying them to modern global events?  Here is an an article I found after visiting a small museum in Iron Mountain, Michigan. I have to find a way to tie it in.

Great suggestions here! Facing History has a bunch of strategies for discussing current events in the classroom as well. Check out their Toolkit!  I particularly like the "Iceberg Diagrams" and the "Toolbox for Care"
