Blending TCI with OER

Patrick Rode
Patrick Rode 10 months ago

I teach 7th grade WH (300-1500) and my district wants me using TCI but I love the OER stuff. Is there a way to blend them? Anybody try? What strategies or activities did you use?

Hi Patrick Rode! One option could be to incorporate some of the OER Project skill-oriented tools with your TCI curriculum. For example, the Causation Tool  could be used to analyze a topic from the TCI text. You could also incorporate some of the OER Project activities that aren't tied to a particular text, such as the Silk Road Simulation.

The Historical Skills and Tools with OER can be moved for any grade level and other curriculum. I use them every week and outside of the OER curriculum. Also, the activities that are included in the OER Project can be used as great hooks. Anne Koschmider said in her post that the Silk Road or the Black Death activities are great no matter what other curriculum is used.

I have used both and I agree with Anne Koschmider   The skills progressions could reaally support what TCI is trying to do.  Have said that I switch entirely from the TCI materials to OER when I was able.  "Free" helped to convince my district.
