Introducing comparison writing

Gwen Duralek

My classes tend to be a bit of a slow roll during the first month or so of class, spending time introducing the broad content and skills. When we get to formal writing, my students have done well with the graphic organizers, especially the comparison of life in 1200 to life today. To help reinforce the themes (and to avoid the "I know about today because I live today"), I gathered a variety of sources to help illustrate the frames for life today.

I also use this poster (that I tried to make look like a picture frame), and will have students keep adding to the types of P&D, networks & communities that we encounter, so that they have this as a frame of reference. Will hopefully turn this into something with more pictures / art to help with my emerging language learners, too. It's all a work in progress.

Thank you for linking us into your template Gwen Duralek ! So glad you have created clear frames to use for today!

The idea to add to your poster is great. Has me thinking, although I teach BHP, I can totally do something similar by adding onto a list of "increasing complexity". Perhaps I can do this via frames that are a bit more BHP oriented. Thank you for sharing- I now have some inspiration!

So this is the work in progress, with my intention to have students develop these frames for each unit of time. I hope to encourage students to see these anchor charts as their work in progress and to make the notebook sized versions of a Frayer their own.

And for those who may have quietly thought that I'd gone off my rocker -- I completely forgot to include 'goods' into Networks on this hastily made poster.

The Frayer models will be updated...and are slowly coming together (while my students are taking some surveys that the school wants done)

Thanks for showing us an example, Gwen Duralek ! I like the idea to have students make notebook sized versions too!
