Which World War I Clips do you use?

Todd Nussen

While I've never shown a full length film to my classes on World War I, I always find myself using clips from a number of movies.  I can't even recall how many different clips I've shown and from what movies and documentaries, but these are the ones I have used for the last two years.  I show the first two back-to-back when we examine the new weapons of war.  The No Man's Land clip when we examine trench warfare and the last one to show a bit of humanity.  I'm always wondering what others use.  Any clips from 1917? Am I missing other important scenes from War Horse or All Quiet on the Western Front?  Other movies or documentaries?

For militarism:

Machine gun v. cavalry War Horse Scene

Tank v. machine gun All Quiet on the Western Front tanks scene

For No Man's Land

War Horse Battle of the Somme

For Humanity:

Christmas Truce 1914

I used to use clips from A Very Long Engagement--scenes of trenches and no man's land. I also liked that the movie is French for some authenticity. Unfortunately, the movie is rated R so we're no longer allowed to show even clips without parental approval.

Todd Nussen You have pretty much covered the ones I always show when studying WW1. I be sure to make it a point to put the parental approval as a section in my syllabus/classroom expectations at the beginning of the year/semester that outlines that 1) We will not watch full length movies, and 2) Video clips shown during social studies class will not exceed a rating of PG-13 for high school students. I do not show any clips from rated R movies.

Great share, Todd! And right on time for me, thank you! Have you used anything from 1917 yet?

I've used this scene before after reading some primary sources first.  Only because it shows the rats, corpses, etc.  It's pretty nasty actually.

I give my students a month to watch a WWI movie at home.  This is my movie list.

Here's the assignment.  Most of my students watched War Horse last year and really enjoyed it.

Nice list Lisa.  Not sure if you checked out the new All Quiet on the Western Front on Netflix (it's good).  I really like the idea of the movie review.  This might be something I would try out this year.  It seems like it holds them responsible for more than just, complete this form.  Can you think of any problems that you have encountered over the years?  Do you do it with any other historical topics?

This is a once a year movie review but I often think of adding this to other units---need to work on one for WWII or Cold War.  My students have shared in previous years how much they like it and sometimes share that they bonded with an older family member over watching a WWI movie which I love to hear.  Yes, I am a big fan of the new AQOTWF movie and I do warn them of the rating and the violence.

Thanks for sharing your movie review Lisa Meyers I've done something similar in other classes. For WWII and the Cold War, I'm thinking you could do the same assignment with just having them watch a few episodes of a show (if you do 2-3 it's often the same time as a movie anyway) instead of movies, although there are plenty for each. For WWII, Band of Brothers and Masters of Air are both fantastic and for the Cold War, there is a series on Netflix called Turning Point: The Bomb And The Cold War that's also very good. Hope this helps as a good starting point!

This is a great idea - easier to fit into the week that way, too. Do you provide students with viewing guidelines or some kind of shorter assignment for the episodes?
