Silk Road misconceptions?

Jim Jaeger
Jim Jaeger over 1 year ago

Cross posted: Not sure if anyone else saw this article from last October from the Guardian. The Silk Road still casts a spell, but was the ancient trading route just a western invention? The article details a recent book by a Scottish historian who emphasizes the importance of India on this trade "route". He posits that the idea of a Silk Road trading route is mostly a western invention that did not make the popular lexicon until 1932. While it did not blow up my entire teaching of the topic, it did raise some new ideas for me.

That's why I really like the WHP video "Rebuilding the Silk Road"!

I enjoyed asking my students to discuss why we continue to use a term that's misleading. We landed on the idea that sometimes simplicity and recognizability are more important than total accuracy.
