Urban Game

The Urban Game is one of my favorite activities every year. I am a member of several teacher groups on Facebook and someone posted this variation of the Urban game that I thought I would share with all of you. It is publicly available on YouTube, and I will insert it in this post. Have fun stressing out your students with this fun activity. I will do it on the first day back from the Winter Break.

Thanks for sharing this video Amber Llewellyn , I'm doing this activity on Friday this week so I'll definitely use it!

I LOVE the urban game, but our AP Human Geo teachers have started using it as well Cry The majority of my students take APHUG their freshmen year and already know how to "beat" the game when they get to me. It is so much fun though.

Our school just moved US History to 9th grade and some of those teachers have started doing the Urban game as well...kind of a bummer for it to lose some of the impact! I'll be on the lookout for alternatives.

Thank you Amber Llewellyn for this video!!! It is so helpful to see the stages of industrialization with background information as the simulation unfolds. I am definitely adding this to my Big History activities. This will be my first time using it. Since the video is 26 minutes long, I expect the activity to take that time plus a debrief session at the end. How do you implement it in your class?

For those of you who might use the "old" version (which has been around from AP Euro circles since I think the early 2000s), OER does a simplified version that might be useful to your students.  I think that the key is a little complex, but it does include timing it.  In my regular WH classes, we take 2ish days to do the old school ones, but in my APWH we draw the foundation one day and then do the entire process the next.

You can find the OER version here:

This was awesome. I unfortunately had to pause the videos as I work with special needs teens who need a lot more time than was given by the video. Regardless, they got the point even with pausing during drawing sections.
