Starting the year with simulations!

Hey everyone!

I just finished the Industrialization unit and am beginning New Imperialism with my 1200 classes. There have been a lot of fun simulations in the rotation:

  1. a cottage industry activity I made myself
  2. Assembly Line Simulation
  3. The Legendary Urban Game

And coming up is one of my favorites, The Scramble for Africa Game from CT Lessons.

Engagement is high, high level questions are being pondered, life is good.

Does anyone have any resources for simulations or games they play in the first half of a 1200 world history course? Particularly units 2, 3, and 4. I'd like to spice up my lessons next year (real spices optional but welcome).

I have used a Castle Builder that I got from a Mr. Roughton (who has a pretty cool website that I have used from time to time called "Teach with Magic). He has another one where students breakdown the murder of Julius Caesar.

I have also tried my hand a making something myself with a City of Uruk/Mapping Activity.

I have not used it, but I do know that OER has a few simulations, including one on the Silk Road. Another similar but often less frequently problematic (LOL) sort of role playing high engagement activity is Mixers! I'm not sure about for this time period but I use a few mixers in my African American history course and it's a great tool, especially when there are a lot of important people and you cannot possibly try and teach them all whole class.
