World War II

I'm planning my World War II unit this week, and I wanted to share the one video that makes the biggest impact on my students every year. It is The Fallen World War II. The number of people killed during World War II is so large that students, and if I'm honest, my brain can not comprehend the numbers, but this video, with its simple graphics, gets the point across every time about how devasting the war was. I read an article once about how the human brain can't visualize large numbers without assistance, and this video provides that assistance. For most of the OER videos, I have them stop and ask discussion questions, but this one is so impactful that I play the whole video before discussing it. I hope this helps you plan your World War II unit.

These are two of my favorite clips from Dan Snow that I repeatedly use:

Any of his WWI stuff is great.

Amber Llewellyn and Melissa Nowotarski your videos are a fantastic addition to our lessons! I teach Big History, and while the broad scope of the course limits the time we can dedicate to this world event, videos are an invaluable resource for learners—especially when they visually break down complex ideas in an engaging way. The Fallen WWII blows my mind in terms of visualization of casualties, and the ones Melissa shared are powerful to unpack the causation of WWI. Thank you both for sharing!

These videos are great Amber Llewellyn and Melissa Nowotarski. I am definitely going to be pulling them into my World War II lessons this year for my AP students. I can see these being helpful for them to understand context as well.

Amber Llewellyn I remember showing this to my students last year and they were stunned when seeing the information presented in this way. Definitely a great video to use. Melissa Nowotarski these look like good videos to include too! I just added the 2nd one into my WWI notes. Thanks for sharing!

Apologize all.  These are great video clips, but of course pertain to WWI.  I responded to the wrong post.  There are now on the WWI strand as well :)

Agreed - this video always engages my 10th graders. I am in WWII right now too, compiling a few of OER's useful Holocaust resources. These three make a great grouping:

Primary Sources,  Graphic Biography: Manuel Quezon and Assessing Responsibility and Conscience

Have you used any of these yet? I'm thinking about creating some discussion circles for these materials. I saw this online - it needs some tweaking for history classrooms but I like the visual division of participation -

Absolutely agree.  This is one of my favorite video resources.  I often find myself explaining to students that the first half of the year we're learning how we got to World War II (arguably the worst event in human history) and the second half of the year is what the world has been like since and what lessons have we learned.  This video is the perfect way to connect these two ideas.
