Working with my US history course, I had the students consider the route they took between home and a typical destination in their town or city. I instructed the students to list what they knew and thought about the things they saw along the way. Next, I asked the students how many of the thoughts and ideas in their heads were not put there by some other human being, either in speech or writing. Furthermore, how many of the objects they used every day could they have invented without the help of another human being. Hopefully this reminded the students of how much we depend on the thoughts and experiences of other human beings.  It is pretty remarkable!

I just caught this post. Jim Jaeger I'm hooked on getting kids talking about this subject.

My Great Inventions class has been working on this topic all term!  I really like how you ask the question "how many thoughts and ideas were not put there by some other human" - I hate to say it, but most teenagers that answer is ZERO.  They are coming of age, and gaining their own thinking right in front of my eyes.  And that's what we're tasked with; training them to think originally.  Love that notion, thanks for spilling that idea here.  I'm really going to focus on that.

Bryan Dibble I am sure some of my students were thinking none at first!  We have a few students who will typically answer any question, so they mostly steer the discussion.  I am not sure if the rest think I am crazy or not.  It always makes for a memorable day!
