Migration

Afternoon, all!

After researching and discussing migration patterns, I closed the class having students calculate some migration times.

Hypothetical: "If your community moved an average of just ten miles a year, consider how many years it would take to travel from Africa through Russia and Siberia, to Alaska and then down the Americas to Tierra del Fuego?"

Then, "imagine the new knowledge you would need to acquire as you traveled from Africa (with its warm climates and abundant vegetation and animal life), to Siberia (with cold climates, scarce vegetation but lots of large animals such as mammoth), to North America (with its huge forests and unfamiliar animals and plants), through the tropical lands of Central America and then through the Andes to Tierra del Fuego?"

Always searching for the connection and to help students apply their new learning to a novel situation!

This is great. When I began to teach early history, it was tough to get across how long of time we are talking about. Students felt like a walk across the land bridge was a summer vacation, but we are talking about dozens of generations moving across the land at a slow pace. Very cool way to illustrate this. Another great idea! Thanks for sharing.

I feel like there is a game in here!    Start with 10 people, students make choices and invest resources  into exploration, population growth or technology.

Goals is to grow population and expand out 1,000 miles or so.

Drew Fortune  Great point! It can be tough to picture this being the mobile people we are today.

You guys sound like you might be on to something fun with your game idea!

But Jim Jaeger , I want to know the answer to how long it will take!!

Is this just a hypothetical thought analogy, or do your kids really calculate it?

Donnetta Elsasser  For this year it was hypothetical.  Next year, we are going live with this!
