World Wars & World History classes

How much time do you spend on the World Wars? I often feel like I spent too much time on the World Wars because both my students and I are more interested in these topics. Between the two wars, we usually spend 2-3 weeks but I’m thinking of shortening it.

Marcella Sykucki OER has a ton of content here for the world wars.  Personally, my online history course only allows for one week per course. I feel like we are pretty rushed to make actual historic connections in that time. I would prefer two weeks for each, but one of my personal catchphrases is "no time, no time". I understand that we eventually need to move on.

We divide them up a bit in NY, but in my 10th grade world history class, I'll spend about 3 weeks on World War I (including the Russian Revolution and the Treaty of Versailles) and another 2-3 weeks on World War II.  That usually includes a movie though that gives us a deeper dive into the Holocaust (The Pianist or Schindler's List).

My advice is: if you're able to spend the time on it and your students are interested in the history - go for it.  That's good teaching.

I have about three weeks for the wars and the interwar period.  I did want to mention i always make time for a Operation Footlocker day, with a kit of real stuff sent from the WWII Museum in New Orleans.  I figure they get at three weeks (mostly WWII) in American History class.  It can be a very motivating topic to many students.

I spent 2 weeks on World War 1 in the Cold War. I can get each War done in 1 week and I frame it with Origins of the War, Driving Conflict, Fighting, Impact and on Friday we do one of the simulations.

So, the Peace Talks is how we end World War 1 and the Cold War Simulation is how we end the second week. That gets us from 1914-1960 in two weeks. BUT , I also cover the Russian Revolution a bit in my Unit on Revolutions and that gets 2 class days a couple weeks prior.

I can generally spend only 2 weeks on the Global Conflict Unit, to ensure that we have time with the pacing to make it all the way to present day.

I generally include an overview day in the unit (looking at the overview/frames videos, the overview guide, and vocabulary), 3 days on WWI, a day or 2 on the interwar period, 3 days on WWII and then a day for an assessment.

It does feel more rushed, and in an ideal world we'd have more time, but that's the most I can spend covering 1200-present day in a single semester.

I've got them taking place over about 2 weeks. The question to ask is... what are you going to get to teach instead?
