Equal Global Coverage?

How do you all hold yourselves accountable/keep track of hitting various regions across the world an adequate amount of times? OER does a pretty good job representing different places in the world during each time period, but I'm always trying to do better. One technique I do right now is that I have a 3D blow up globe of the world, and each time we learn about an event that happened somewhere, I mark it with a little red sticker. That way we can all see, including my students, which areas are getting more or less coverage, and adjust accordingly.

I took a trip to Canada last week, and on one of the excursions struck up a conversation with an older couple from Indonesia. It dawned on me that Indonesia gets very little coverage in my class, even though I definitely aspire to a worldlier world history.

Last year, I tried (and sort of failed) to do what you're talking about. I tried to expand on the very Euro-centric district curriculum and cover areas that traditionally don't get much coverage. OER is great for that, but I think it overwhelmed my students a bit by aiming too high. I like your idea of the map, that's sort of what I was doing in my own planning process.

This year, I'm going the opposite tack. I'm going to try to boil the curriculum down to just the essentials and reserve about half of our class time for student-directed projects. That way, students can choose what places they study and hopefully I can encourage them to spread out and cover a larger area.

Way too many details here if you want to look it over...
