The Mongols: Trick, Treat... or Total Terror?

Becca Horowitz
Becca Horowitz 1 month ago

When Genghis Khan’s armies thundered across Eurasia, they left cities in ruins but also wove together one of the most connected worlds in history. Under Mongol rule, merchants thrived, scholars shared ideas from China to Persia, and even astronomy got a boost.

But those same trade routes also carried the Black Death. So… were the Mongols history’s ultimate villains, or unlikely world-builders?

How do your students weigh the terror and the triumphs of Mongol rule?

Read Bennett Sherry 's Written in the Stars: Secrets of the Mongol Empire with your students and share your class's take in the poll—if you dare. Jack o lantern

Well, I'm going to have to cast my class's vote for negative. Despite a valiant effort by the defense attorneys, Genghis Khan was convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity in our class trial. It was a tough decision, though. The jury members did quite a bit of deliberating!

We start the new year with the Mongols.  I will be interested in these results.  If we switch the scale we can bring this back to ourselves.  Have I been a positive force or a negative force?  While I suspect third hours response would sadden me, my consoling thought, at least I'm not a mongol, I guess gives my vote away.  How does one register a vote?

Eric Schulz Anne Koschmider Thanks for weighing in! There's a tiny "vote" button that shows up below the answer choices when logged in. Click that and then you'll get the multiple choice view.

I had one section go all in for the Mongols, and then one section were all against.  They had exactly the same sources!
