Have you tried the Expanding Power Opener for lesson 6.2 from Origins?

I use Orgins as my primary set of materials but I often fell set with the activities I already selected.  Today I checked out this Expanding Power Opener.  It fits so well with the Iowa standard I currently use about expanding power.  I was impressed with the engagement.  After step four I have students lift up their conversations where they compared the response.  A student equated religious tolerance with respect and explained why it was most important.  Another student rank it number 8 and said while it may be important to maintain power it was less important for expanding power.  I felt good about every minute we spenty on this and I did not have to modify anything.  How are you and your students reacting to this activity?

Eric Schulz This kind of engagement and collaboration from students is why we all do this!

Eric Schulz I love the idea of making student thinking visible to each other by holding their responses up. Sounds like a great way to practice making claims and explaining reasoning too!

It was a great intro activity for the Mongols and a perfect launch point for this mini-DBQ I adapted from New Visions.

This activity was a hit for me as well! It sparked good discussion and it felt like providing the options to rank made it accessible for every student.
