Differentiation in Writing

Allyson Eubanks
Allyson Eubanks 1 month ago

Hello all! This is my first time asking a question on the OER Discussion Board!

Today I am seeking advice on how to best differentiate in the classroom, really focusing on how I can better support students when they write! Classroom's are filled with students at many different levels, and this can be challenging when I aim to develop student's reasoning skills through their writing!

How do you collect information about students in the classroom, and how do you use that information to support / differentiate their writing? Any and all thoughts are welcome!

Great question Allyson Eubanks ! We've got some ideas for differentiating writing on pages 4-6 of our Differentiation Guide. What do you think about sentence frames as a way to try out expressing different forms of reasoning? Can't wait to see what other teachers chime in with.

Becca Horowitz I think sentence frames are a great starting point for smaller writing pieces, but can be cumbersome when you scale up to full essays. My district uses the DBQ Project, which does a really nice job of breaking down the thesis of an essay with a tool called the 'chicken foot'.

Will Nash I love the visual and the name "chicken foot." That would be hard to forget!

I second the bucketing and chicken foot process, Will Nash. The DBQ project is another great resource.
