You Pick History: French Revolution or the Russian Revolution?

Bennett Sherry
Bennett Sherry 5 months ago

If you had to choose just one to teach, would it be the French Revolution or the Russian Revolution?

  • What tips the scales for you—student engagement, available sources, clarity of causes, modern connections, primary documents, sheer drama?
  • Which revolution sparks stronger classroom discussion?
  • Where do students wrestle more deeply with ideas like equality, power, and rights?
  • Which one feels more relevant to today?
  • What’s a lesson, activity, or source that really brings it to life?

Make your case!

Bennett Sherry it is hard to choose, but due to the relevance of capitalism and the ideals of Enlightenment thinkers, I am more inclined to choose the French Revolution. Many of my students are from Latin American countries, where the ideas of liberty and popular sovereignty resonate with them. The Haitian Revolution and the wars of independence in Latin America were directly inspired by the ideals of the French Revolution.

Regarding classroom discussion, the Russian Revolution tends to generate more controversy, particularly among older students.
