Sourcing—understanding who wrote a document, where it was written, and why it was written—is essential for historical analysis and interpretation. Without grasping an author’s purpose and perspective, it’s difficult to accurately interpret a document. Therefore, students will learn to identify how an author frames an event and how that influences their interpretation. To fully comprehend a historical account, students must understand the author behind it. Analyzing sources or documents is the first step in working with primary sources. We advocate teaching students to examine primary source documents for contextual understanding and to extract information to make informed judgments.
