This time, OER Project Senior Engagement Manager (and former Social Studies lead for the state of Nebraska) Ebony McKiver will be interviewing Arizona State University Associate Professor Lauren McArthur Harris and Iowa University Assistant Professor Maia Sheppard on their recent publication, Teaching Difficult Histories in Difficult Times.

About Western States Civics Coalition

Now, more than ever, a strong civic education is vital for students in the United States. Teachers are the key to providing students with the necessary knowledge and skills for sustaining our democracy. This series of workshops provides educators with a strong foundation of Civic Education centering on the EAD Roadmap and the 6 Promising Practices of Civics Education which supports high quality civics education for kindergarten through grade 12. These workshops are presented by the Western State Civics Coalition consisting of state social studies leaders and councils in Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, and Washington.

Lauren McArthur Harris

Lauren McArthur Harris is an associate professor of history education with a joint appointment in the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College and the School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies.

Maia Sheppard

Maia Sheppard is an Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Social Studies Education at the University of Iowa. Her research and publications address a range of topics related to teaching and learning history, social studies teacher education, and teacher leadership.

Ebony McKiver

Ebony McKiver is currently the Senior Engagement Manager for OER Project/Gates Ventures. She previously served as the social studies lead for the state of Nebraska.
